The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
